Learn how to create a beautiful landscape inspired by our Metroparks using pastel! In this course, Mary Jane will lead you through a series of exercises designed for the beginner through advanced pastel artist. Instruction will cover composition, color, and technique for painting with pastel, as well as working through individual challenges that students will encounter throughout the creative process. Individual instruction is tailored to each student's knowledge base of pastel and objectives.

Students should bring or buy the following materials to participate in this course:

  • At a minimum 2-9" x 12" mid tone colored sheets of sanded pastel paper. Avoid white, black, dark brown, or dark blue.

  • A good selection of artist quality pastels in landscape colors. Sennelier and Faber Castell soft pastels are sold individually and in sets at The Depo. Bring whatever Soft Pastels you have on hand, and Mary Jane can make additional suggestions if needed to complete your pastel painting, or expand your collection as desired.

  • And, you will need a colored pencil (no lead pencils please). If you don't have one handy, you can borrow one from someone in the class.

You can also call the store ahead of time and have any or all of these items collected and held for when you arrive for the class.
