Do you get overwhelmed when looking at all the paint colors available?  Not sure which colors to use, or which to use together? This class is for all painters who want a better understanding of how to choose and select a "limited" color palette to use for their artwork, and how to mix those colors together to achieve a harmonious composition. Students will create two paintings each week using the same reference photo (of their choosing), and a variation of different color palette as demonstrated by Deb. We recommend choosing a very simple reference photo for this workshop so multiple paintings can be completed in a timely manner.

Class Agenda:
Session 1: Use of the color wheel as it relates to color selection. Students will create an initial painting grisaille painting using black and white to better understand "value" and its importance and relationship to color. The second will be a monochrome, black, white, and one color. If paintings are not completed during class time, they should be finished at home before the next class session.
Session 2: Students will re-create their painting using a "Direct Complement" color palette and a Direct Compliment plus black and white for the second painting.
Session 3: Students will re-create their painting using a "Split Complement" color palette from the previous week.and a Split Compliment plus black and white for the second painting.
Session 4: Students will re-create their painting using a "Triadic" color palette and a Triadic color palette plus black and white.
Session 5: Students will re-create their painting using an “Analogous” color palette and an analogous color palette plus black and white.

Supplies Required; students should bring or buy the following materials to participate in this course:

  • A total of 10 substrates of their choosing, illustration board (cut to size by the students in advance of class), canvas board, gesso board, or canvas 5x7". Students may also use one larger piece of illustration board divided into 5x7” sections if desired, as to keep all paintings on one board for future reference.

  • Color wheel

  • Paint brushes

  • Cups for water

  • Paper towels

  • Holbein Acryla Gouache paint set of 12 colors OR similar set of opaque paints that come in a color theory mixing set. (Students will need to have a tube of each primary and secondary hue plus black and white. Deb selected the Holbein set because it has a range of hues and their “exact” complements. In past classes, students each brought various brands of paints to use, and some of their colors were not pure. The paints were sometimes opaque or transparent, and some hues had either a warm or cold temperature bias that interfered with student’s abilities to mix colors cleanly and achieve the desired results due to variations in their paints. If you would like to bring another brand or type of paint, please consult with Deb or Jules in advance of class to find a suitable solution.)

  • Graphite transfer paper

  • Paint palette, disposable palette paper, or any surface on which to mix paints

  • Metal palette knife

  • Pencil

  • Tote bag or tool box to transport supplies

  • A flat box to transport wet paintings home each week after class

  • Pen and notebook or sketchbook

  • An image to paint (you will re-use the same image each week). Bring a black and white, and color copy. If you'd like to trace your image onto your painting surface, the image should be scaled and printed to the size of your substrate on inexpensive, thin copy paper. If you are unable to scale and print your image at home, please have it printed at a copy shop, as the Depo only has a black and white copier designed for text documents.
