Students should meet at The Art Supply Depo promptly at 10:00am.  The class will meet briefly in the studio to ensure students have all the supplies required for the class, then caravan over (in your own car) to the new Middle Grounds Metropark where students will work in Plein Air (outside) to capture the beauty of the Maumee River where it intersects with the Downtown urban environment.

Plein air painting is about leaving the four walls of your studio behind and experiencing painting and drawing in the landscape. The practice goes back for centuries but was truly made into an art form by the French Impressionists. In this special course, Mary Jane will lead you through a series of exercises designed for the beginner through advanced pastel artist.  Instruction will cover composition, color, and technique for painting with pastel, as well as working through individual challenges that students will encounter throughout the creative process. Individual instruction is tailored to each student's knowledge base of pastel and objectives.

Students will spend the first hour and a half (or so) working on a drawing to practice with the medium and loosening up. In the latter portion of the class, students will work on a more detailed and complete pastel landscape using the techniques practiced earlier in class.

Students should bring or buy the following materials to participate in this oil-pastel course:

  • A 19x25" sheet of Canson Mi Tientes (or Daler Rowney Murano) paper in a middle brown color, cut into quarters or half sheets (depending on how large you'd like to work).
  • A good selection of pastels in landscape colors (at least 15 colors or so). Sennelier and Holbein oil pastels are sold individually and in sets at The Depo.
  • A drawing board large enough to accomodate your paper.  This can be purchased or made from a piece of wood you might already have on hand.
  • And, you will need a colored pencil (no lead pencils please). If you don't have one handy, you can borrow one from someone in the class.
  • A tote bag or system to carry your materials.
  • A small portable folding chair, sun hat and or sunscreen if preferred, a water bottle or beverage, and any other items you may desire to make you more comfortable for the 4-hour outdoor class.

You can also call the store ahead of time and have any or all of these items collected and held for when you arrive for the class.
