Learn how to create a beautiful landscape using pastel! In this course, Mary Jane will lead you through a series of exercises designed for the beginner through advanced pastel artist. Instruction will cover composition, color, and technique for painting with pastel, as well as working through individual challenges that students will encounter throughout the creative process. Individual instruction is tailored to each student's knowledge base of pastel and objectives.
Students will spend the first hour and a half (or so) working on a drawing to practice with the medium and loosening up. In the latter portion of the class, students will work on a more detailed and complete pastel landscape using the techniques practiced earlier in class.
Students should bring or buy the following materials to participate in this course:
At a minimum 2-9" x 12" black sanded paper, please be sure to purchase a darker color. This technique requires a darker surface.
A good selection of pastels in landscape colors. Sennelier soft pastels are sold individually and in sets at The Depo. Bring whatever Soft Pastels you have on hand, and Mary Jane can make additional suggestions if needed to complete your pastel painting, or expand your collection as desired.
A drawing board. This can be purchased or made from a piece of wood you might already have on hand. Approximately size 2 feet by 2 feet.
And, you will need a colored pencil (no lead pencils please). If you don't have one handy, you can borrow one from someone in the class.
You can also call the store ahead of time and have any or all of these items collected and held for when you arrive for the class.
*Students with NO prior drawing experience are encouraged to take a "Drawing for Beginners" workshop with Deb Buchanan, or another drawing workshop offered at The Depo, The Toledo Museum of Art, or The Toledo Artist's Club. Paul Brand, Katie Delay, and Jenny Giovanucci are excellent drawing instructors and highly recommended by The Depo. Info on our Drawing for Beginners Workshop, hosted every 7 weeks in the Toledo Depo is available here: http://artsupplydepo.com/toledo-workshops/drawing-for-beginners
